Regional guides to every Raja Ampat cruising ground — north, Misool, Triton Bay, Cenderawasih and beyond, with routes and vessels for each.
Raja Ampat is not one destination but several cruising grounds, each with its own season, character and sailing distances. This index points to the regional guides behind every charter route we plan — from the northern loop around Waigeo and Wayag to the remote lagoons of Misool and the extended passages towards Triton Bay, Cenderawasih Bay and the Banda Sea.
If you are still deciding where to sail, start with the Raja Ampat map to see how the regions sit relative to Sorong, then read the month-by-month guide. Our concierge desk builds the final route around your dates, your vessel and what you want to see — reach us on WhatsApp at +62 811-3810-8110 or sales@komodoluxury.com.
Every region below has a dedicated planning page covering anchorages, dive sites, village visits and the sailing legs between them.
If this is your first Raja Ampat charter, sail the north. The Dampier Strait, Fam and Wayag sit within short hops of Sorong, which means less time under way and more time in the water — and the anchorages are the ones most vessels know best. Misool rewards a second visit or a longer charter: it is roughly a full night’s steaming from Sorong, so a week there works best when you are willing to trade transit time for near-empty reefs.
Charters of ten nights or more can combine both, and anything beyond that opens the extended cruising grounds — Triton Bay, Cenderawasih Bay, the Banda Sea — each with its own narrow season. The month you travel usually decides the region before the region decides the boat, so start with the seasonal guide, then match a vessel from the fleet.
Kabui Bay, The Passage and the bays of Batanta are the most sheltered water in northern Raja Ampat, and Misool’s lagoon systems around Balbulol and Wayil are similarly protected. Guests who are prone to motion usually do best on a route that overnights in those anchorages rather than one that steams out to Wayag and back inside the same week.
Yes, if you have seven nights or more. Wayag is the karst landscape Raja Ampat is known for, and it is the one region no day trip from a Dampier Strait base can reach comfortably. It costs an overnight passage in each direction, so four-night charters usually trade Wayag for more time around Arborek, Cape Kri and Manta Sandy.
No – a whole-vessel charter carries you between regions, which is its main advantage over a land-based stay. The same yacht runs the northern loop through Fam, Piaynemo and Wayag, then continues south to Misool on a ten to twelve night itinerary. Larger vessels extend further still, to Triton Bay, Kaimana or Cenderawasih Bay, when the season allows.
The Passage is the narrow channel separating Waigeo from Gam, cruised rather than crossed – mangrove walls, jungle on both banks and a tidal flow that turns it into a drift snorkel or dive. Charters usually run it on the return leg from Wayag towards the Dampier Strait, and it is one of the few stops that works equally for divers and non-divers.
