The Six Legs
Grouped as legs rather than single days — each one covers several days on site before the next passage. The order shifts with weather, especially the eastern crossing.
Days 1–3: Sorong Dampier Strait
Board at Sorong and settle into the Dampier Strait — Cape Kri and the reefs around it, the highest recorded fish count in a single dive anywhere in the world.
Days 4–5: Dampier Strait Wayag
North to the karst country. The limestone towers and hidden lagoons, the summit climb for the view, and shallow-water snorkelling rather than deep diving here.
Days 6–7: Wayag Piaynemo & the Fam islands
Piaynemo's viewpoint and the Fam islands around it — kayaking through the channels, snorkelling the coral gardens, and a stop with the local community.
Days 8–10: Piaynemo Misool
The long run south. Three full days among Misool's limestone arches and soft-coral walls — Boo Windows and the manta cleaning station at Magic Mountain, both reasons the south is worth the passage.
Days 11–12: Misool Batanta & Salawati
A change of pace — dense rainforest, waterfalls and jungle trekking rather than reef. This is not where the red bird of paradise trek happens; that is Sawinggrai, on Waigeo, further north.
Days 13–14: Batanta Cendrawasih Bay
The passage east — a full day and night under way, past the Bird's Head, to a separate national park. Whale sharks at the fishing platforms, the one encounter on this route that nothing shorter can reach.
