Some charter yachts are named for wives, daughters or constellations. Anne Bonny is named for the Irish pirate who worked the Caribbean in the early 1700s and became shorthand for a certain kind of unapologetic independence. It suits the boat. A custom 30-metre hull carrying just eight guests is not built for the marina-party circuit; she is built for going places — and in Raja Ampat, “going places” means threading limestone channels, anchoring off uninhabited karst islets, and waking up somewhere that has no name on most charts.

Our favourite Anne Bonny programme is the 7-night southern circuit: from Sorong toward Misool’s labyrinth in the south, then days spent among Balbulol’s rock spires, the hidden lagoons around Wayil, the Daram islets, and the twin celebrity dive sites of Magic Mountain and Boo Windows before the return leg. The south is Raja Ampat at its most theatrical — karst towers rising sheer from blue water, rock art on cliff faces, lagoons you enter through gaps barely wider than the tender. Raja Ampat sits at the centre of the Bird’s Head Seascape, where scientific surveys have recorded more than 1,700 fish species and 550 coral species, and a southern itinerary puts the fishiest of it in reach — Magic Mountain’s manta traffic, Boo Windows’ famous swim-through arches, Farondi’s walls. On northern legs, the Dampier Strait classics take over: Cape Kri’s record-setting fish counts, the manta stations, and quirky crowd-pleasers like Chicken Reef, where the schooling action regularly upstages bigger names. Non-divers get the same geography from the surface: the snorkelling is world-class, and Misool’s lagoons were made for kayaks. Marine park entry (the PIN card, currently around IDR 700,000–1,000,000 per person per year — confirmed at booking) is handled before you arrive.
