One-way Raja Ampat to Komodo yacht crossing via the Banda Sea and Alor: April-May and October-November windows, 10-14 nights. Rates verified August 2026.
The Raja Ampat to Komodo yacht crossing is a 10-14 night one-way voyage across the Banda Sea and the Alor archipelago, run when Indonesia’s large charter yachts reposition between their two home seasons: westbound in April-May as vessels leave Raja Ampat for Komodo, and eastbound in October-November as they return. It is the longest, wildest itinerary in the Indonesian charter calendar, and because the yachts have to make the passage anyway, it is also one of the most rewarding ways to spend two weeks on the water. Every crossing is planned end-to-end by our Bali-based concierge desk, operated by Komodo Luxury since 2015.
Seasons. The large expedition yachts and phinisi of the partner fleet network run Raja Ampat from November to April, then Komodo from May to October, following the calmest water in each region. Twice a year the entire top end of the fleet must reposition across roughly a thousand miles of eastern Indonesia, and rather than sail empty, the best vessels sell the passage as a charter in its own right.
For guests, that mechanic creates a rare product: a genuine expedition through waters no weekly loop ever touches, aboard yachts that are otherwise booked solid in their home seasons. The route strings together Misool’s lagoons, the open Banda Sea, the nutmeg islands of Banda Neira, the ridges of Alor and the dragon islands of Komodo National Park, in a single unbroken arc.
There are two, and they are short. Westbound crossings depart Raja Ampat in April-May; eastbound crossings leave Komodo for Raja Ampat in October-November. Both align neatly with the Banda Sea’s own best months, September-November and March-April, when conditions are settled and schooling hammerhead sharks are the region’s signature sighting for divers.
| Direction | Window | Season logic |
|---|---|---|
| Raja Ampat to Komodo (westbound) | April-May | Fleet leaves Raja Ampat at season close; Banda Sea calm in March-April |
| Komodo to Raja Ampat (eastbound) | October-November | Fleet returns for Raja Ampat’s November-April prime; Banda hammerhead season September-November |
Departures are strictly limited: each yacht makes the crossing once per direction per year. If a specific vessel or direction matters, plan 9-12 months ahead; the 2027 windows are already taking reservations.
The outline below sketches a representative westbound crossing, Sorong to Labuan Bajo. Eastbound programs mirror it. Distances are real on this route, so the rhythm alternates immersion days with honest sailing legs, and the final plan always bends to weather.
Embark in Sorong, reached by direct flight from Jakarta in about four hours, and head south for a last immersion in Raja Ampat: the rock spires of Balbulol, Boo Windows, and dives at Magic Mountain, where reef and oceanic mantas share a cleaning station. A fitting goodbye to the world’s richest reefs before the bow turns southwest.
Open-water passage. These are the deck days that give a crossing its character: watch-keeping with the crew, deep-blue swimming stops when conditions allow, and horizon in every direction.
Landfall at the original spice islands. Walk Banda Neira’s colonial nutmeg groves and fort, dive lava-flow reefs beneath the volcano, and in season watch for the Banda Sea’s schooling hammerheads on the deep walls.
Current-fed ridges, black-sand critter dives and some of eastern Indonesia’s most traditional village cultures, visited respectfully through local contacts. Alor is many crews’ favourite anchorage of the entire route, and it is effectively unreachable on any standard weekly charter.
Volcano silhouettes to starboard as the yacht works west along Flores, with reef stops and beach landings chosen on the day.
Arrive inside Komodo National Park for a ranger-led dragon walk and a final reef dive, then disembark in Labuan Bajo with onward flights arranged before you ever boarded. Add extra Komodo days through our booking brand Komodo Luxury if the dragons deserve more than a finale.
Crossings are quoted whole-boat on the vessel’s standard weekly terms, typically formatted as a from-rate per week plus expenses, with fuel for the passage itemised in the proposal. Rates verified August 2026.
| Vessel | Indicative rate (USD) |
|---|---|
| Dunia Baru, 51m phinisi | from $130,000 per week + expenses |
| Silolona, 50m phinisi | from $130,900 per week + expenses |
| Lamima, flagship sailing phinisi | from $175,000 per week + expenses |
| Kudanil Explorer, 56m expedition ship | from $175,000 per week + expenses |
| Aqua Blu, 60m expedition yacht | from $388,000 per week + expenses |
Only vessels with genuine range and seakeeping sell the passage, which is why the crossing list reads like the flagship tier of the Indonesian fleet: Lamima, Dunia Baru, Silolona, Kudanil Explorer and Aqua Blu among them, alongside select expedition phinisi from the 30+ vessel partner network. Their home-season programs are detailed across our Raja Ampat yacht charter fleet pages, and the southern lagoons you will farewell on days one to three are mapped in the Misool yacht charter guide. Slower, and better for it. Sailing legs settle into a rhythm the weekly loops never find: long breakfasts as the log ticks over, time in the saloon with charts and books, an open invitation to the bridge for anyone curious about weather routing and watch-keeping. The galley rises to the occasion, since provisioning for two weeks at sea is planned to the day, and evenings belong to the deck, where the Banda Sea delivers stargazing with zero light pollution. Crews on these flagship vessels have made the crossing many times; routing decisions are conservative, alternates are always planned, and swim stops and unscheduled anchorages appear whenever the sea allows.
It suits travellers who value the journey as much as the sites: couples and families comfortable with real sailing days, divers chasing the Banda Sea’s walls and hammerheads, and returning guests who have done the classic loops and want the map’s empty spaces. It is not the right first Indonesian charter for guests who want short hops and a swim before every meal; for that, a seven-night Raja Ampat or Komodo program is the better fit, and we will say so plainly when we plan with you.
Start with your preferred direction and window, April-May or October-November, and your group profile. Our concierge team in Bali then builds the voyage end-to-end: vessel shortlist with verified crossing rates, the day-by-day routing, permits for both marine parks and the islands between, provisioning for two weeks at sea, dive guides and documentation, and flight logistics at both ends. One desk, one accountable plan, across a thousand miles of Indonesia.
