The archipelago in one paragraph
Cendrawasih Bay is often shown on the same map. It is roughly 600 km east and a different national park — it belongs on a 14-night route, not on a week.

Orientation
Everything begins at Sorong on the mainland. Waisai, out on Waigeo, is the administrative capital and the second boarding point — the two-hour crossing between them is the first real distance you cover.
The Dampier Strait runs between Waigeo and Batanta. Almost every charter is built around it, because it is where the current, the reef fish and the manta stations are.
Wayag, Piaynemo and the Fam islands are limestone country — viewpoints, lagoons and shallow reef. They photograph better than they dive.
Misool is four to six hours by speedboat from Waisai, or an overnight steam. That single fact is what decides whether a charter is seven nights or ten.

The Year
Sea state matters more here than weather does — the long legs north and south are open water, and July and August can close them.
Questions
Four main islands — Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool — with more than 1,500 smaller islands, cays and shoals around them, off the northwest tip of the Bird's Head in Southwest Papua. In practice it divides into three zones a charter can reach: the Dampier Strait in the centre, the karst country north, and Misool south.
Dampier Strait is 30 to 60 minutes from Waisai, Piaynemo about two hours, Wayag two to three, and Misool four to six by speedboat — or an overnight steam if you are aboard. Those numbers, not the number of dive sites, are what set your itinerary length.
No. It sits roughly 600 km east, past the Bird's Head, in Teluk Cendrawasih National Park — a separate protected area and Indonesia's largest marine park. It appears only on 14-night routes, and it is the one place where whale sharks are a year-round encounter.
IDR 1,700,000 per international visitor — the TLPJL conservation levy plus the UPTD entry ticket — and IDR 725,000 for Indonesian citizens. Valid twelve months from purchase, for unlimited entries. Everyone over 12 needs one, diver or not.
October to April, when the seas are calmest and the crossings are comfortable. Manta activity in the Dampier Strait peaks December to March. July and August are the roughest months.

Plan The Route
Wayag and Misool in one week is possible and costs two days under way. We will say that rather than sell you a route that spends its time steaming past everything.
