Raja Ampat Snorkeling — Best Spots from Your Yacht

Over-under view of a shallow reef beneath a karst island

Snorkelling here, honestly

You do not need to dive to see the best of Raja Ampat

The reef tops here begin at one to three metres, which is the whole reason snorkelling works so well in Raja Ampat — the coral gardens, anemonefish and turtles that divers travel for are in plain sight from the surface. Mantas at the Dampier Strait cleaning stations are watched from above too. A private yacht means the swim platform is the entry point, and you go in when the tide is right rather than when a schedule says so — operated by Komodo Luxury since 2015.

Snorkellers and divers run the same sites on the same day — nobody sits out.

Where To Get In

Five sites, and how hard each one actually is

  1. Manta Sandy & Manta Ridge

    Dampier Strait
    2–18 m Moderate

Cleaning stations where mantas queue over the sand. The peak window is December to March.

  2. Friwen Wall

    Offshore reef
    2–18 m Strong

A sheer wall of sea fans, sponges and nudibranchs. The current here wants a confident swimmer.

  3. Arborek Jetty

    Gam Island
    1.5–28 m Mild

The most forgiving site of the five — sharks, turtles and dugongs under a village jetty.

  4. Yeben Shallows

    West Gam
    1–18 m Mild

Coral gardens in waist-deep water with reef fish throughout. Good for first-timers and children.

  5. House reefs

    At anchor
    1.5–9 m Variable

Straight off the swim platform wherever you moor. Sharks, turtles and nudibranchs without a tender ride.

Plan The Snorkelling

Tell us who is swimming and we will build the route around them

Mixed groups are the norm here. Send us the ages, the swimmers and the divers and we will pick the sites and the tide windows that suit all of them.
