Aerial view of the Raja Ampat karst archipelago

The archipelago in one paragraph

Four zones, one gateway town, and a lot of water between them

Raja Ampat is over 1,500 islands, cays and shoals off the northwest tip of the Bird's Head in Southwest Papua, built around four main islands — Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool. Everything starts at Sorong (SOQ). From there the archipelago divides into three zones you can realistically reach on one charter — the Dampier Strait in the centre, the karst country in the north, and Misool in the south — plus Cendrawasih Bay, which is not Raja Ampat at all but appears on the longest routes.

How far apart the zones sit is what decides your itinerary length, not how many sites you want to dive.

The Four Zones

How the archipelago divides up

Getting There

Every leg, in order

  1. Jakarta or Bali Sorong (SOQ)

    4.5–6.75 hrs Domestic flight

No international flight lands in Sorong, so everyone connects through Jakarta, Makassar, Manado or Bali. Overnight departures from Jakarta reach Sorong at dawn.

  2. SOQ airport Sorong marina

10–20 min ~10 km by road

Pelabuhan Rakyat Sorong. Many charters board here directly, which removes the ferry leg entirely.

  3. Sorong Waisai

~2 hrs ferry · ~1 hr speedboat Sea crossing

Waisai is the administrative capital, on Waigeo. Only needed if your vessel is based there rather than in Sorong.

  4. Waisai The dive grounds

    30 min – 6 hrs Aboard

Dampier Strait is 30 to 60 minutes away; Wayag two to three hours; Misool four to six by speedboat, or an overnight steam under way.

Distances

How long each hop actually takes

Sorong → Waisai

~2 hrs by ferry, ~1 hr by speedboat

Waisai → Dampier Strait

30–60 minutes

Waisai → Wayag

2–3 hours by speedboat

Waisai → Misool

4–6 hours by speedboat, or an overnight steam aboard

Raja Ampat → Cendrawasih Bay

Roughly 600 km east — a separate park, on 14-night routes only

Ferry schedule

Daily at 14:00, plus a 09:00 sailing on Sundays. IDR 125,000 one-way

Every Destination

Fourteen places, and how far each one is

  1. Cape Kri

    Dampier Strait
    30–60 min 5–30 m

The highest recorded fish count in a single dive — 374 species. Schools of snapper and sweetlips over the ridge.

  2. Manta Sandy

    Dampier Strait
    30–60 min 15–25 m

Manta cleaning station on sand, gentle current. Best December to March.

  3. Blue Magic

    Dampier Strait
    30–60 min 10–45 m

A limestone and coral seamount working strong current — sharks, jacks and mantas in the blue.

  4. Sardine Reef

    Dampier Strait
    30–60 min 5–20 m

Enormous baitball formations with reef sharks and turtles working the edges.

  5. Mike's Point

    Dampier Strait
    30–60 min 5–35 m

A steep wall with the macro — crabs, nudibranchs and pygmy seahorses on the fans.

  6. Chicken Reef

    Dampier Strait
    30–60 min 3–12 m

Shallow coral garden in light current. The forgiving first dive of a charter.

  7. Wayag

    Northern Waigeo
    2–3 hrs 5–20 m

Limestone towers and hidden lagoons. Shallow reefs and viewpoint hikes rather than deep diving.

  8. Piaynemo

    Fam islands
    ~2 hrs 5–20 m

The star-lagoon viewpoint, west of Waigeo. Best at sunrise or late afternoon.

  9. Kabui Bay

    Waigeo–Gam
    ~1 hr 2–10 m

The passage west of Waisai — quiet lagoons, mangrove edges and red bird of paradise in the trees.

  10. Boo Windows

    Misool
    4–6 hrs 5–15 m

Limestone arches punched through the reef wall. A photographer favourite.

  11. Magic Mountain

    Misool
    4–6 hrs 10–50 m

Seamount cleaning station — the southern manta site, with sharks and jacks.

  12. Fiabacet

    Misool
    4–6 hrs 3–12 m

Shallow coral garden dense with reef fish. Reef hooks in the stronger tides.

  13. Daram

    Misool
    4–6 hrs 10–70 m

Deep wall in strong current — the most demanding site in the south.

  14. Cendrawasih Bay

    Separate park
    14-night 5–20 m

Whale sharks at the fishing platforms, year-round. Roughly 600 km east of Raja Ampat.

Plan The Route

Tell us which zones you want and we will tell you how many nights it takes

Distance is the real constraint here. Misool and Wayag in one week is possible but costs two days under way — we will say so rather than sell you a route that spends its time steaming.
